In refurbishing pre-war and post-war motors, replacement of worn out axle bushings is both one of the most important and difficult tasks. Old, worn out bearings significantly diminish performance by increasing mechanical resistance, which can cause serious damage to the electrical components. Lionel O gauge axle bearings were installed from the inside of the motor frame when the new motor was assembled. Removing them and installing new bearings is one of the most difficult yet important service tasks. No unique tools or parts have been available for this chore, until now.

First, the NEW SL-52 Bearing Stud (motor mounting post) makes it practical to break the motor apart to remove the old axle bearings and install the new ones. Once this is completed, the motor can be re-assembled with new SL-52 Bearing Studs, just like in the original production. Taking the motor apart also enables you to thoroughly clean all of the parts and easily rewire the pickup assembly and field coil. Finally, the NEW STX-SL90 Flaring Tool makes it possible to install new axle bushings in a repeatedly professional manner.

The STX-SL52 Bearing Stud Anvil has been developed for those of you who have a Rivet/wheel press. It is used to hold the SL-52 Bearing Stud so that it can be attached to one side of the motor (plate) first. This makes reassembly of the motor a little easier and allows you to use your riveting and flaring tools to expand the ends of the stud. Finally, the STX-SL52 Clincher is used to flare the end of the SL-52 Bearing Stud, just like original factory production.
